I can't help you to choose (I am obviously biased ;) ) What I can suggest to 
you is to come and irc (on both channel #koffice and #calligra) and talk to 
people and see with who you get along. Also, right now code base are still 
rather close, so making a patch and submiting to both is workable (this is 
actually what Ganesh is doing).
And later, when the dust settle, things will be much more clear.
