I think the OP wants to use the images in the database to recover them.

OP,

the digikam database contains thumbnails and the location of the 
original files. It is not a backup. You will need to hire a data 
recovery service to get the photos off of that corrupted drive. The only 
way to really keep them safe is to make backups before the problems happen.
