This perspective seems good.

KDE isn't unknown to the world, but it is not yet so visible as some 
other aspects of Free Software. But, the longevity of the community 
effort and "product" is testament to its value so far, and to its 
potential, as well. The community is broad, diverse, and yet well 
connected. Plasma Desktop, all the "KDE" software which is notable, even 
on its own, and new stuff like Plasma Active provides an ecosystem which 
works well together. An "ordinary" user will appreciate the benefits 
whether or not they care about the inner workings. That says a lot for 
the community, and deserves community celebration which will be done on 
the spot wherever the community members are, working alone or getting 
together to raise a glass and have their cake to eat, too.

KDE has a great community, as I see it from a happy user's perspective. 
The celebrations of that community are satisfying in themselves. It 
doesn't make sense to be stressed that KDE's celebrations don't make a 
big, public splash. It does makes sense to be a steadily happier group, 
event after event, release after release. KDE's style and quality 
percolates outward from the core to the periphery and there will be a 
growing, happy community as a result.
