First, I want to apologize if I came across as trying to attack the
Krita fundraiser in any way. You guys are doing an amazing job with it,
seriously. I just wanted everyone to take a look at it with a critical
eye so that we can learn from it.

Regarding thinking of this like sales, as a "marketing" person, I'd like
to even expand that out a little further. We are marketing a product,
not just selling one. We should be asking ourselves, start to finish,
the right questions (Who will use this? What are their wants and needs?
How can we satisfy their wants and needs?), not just in the promo team,
but really throughout KDE as a whole. That's part of why I've been
aiming to make things more geared toward the general community, rather
than the enthusiast community that we seem to aim for right now.

Before we even define what we bring to our audience, we want to
understand our audience. Who are they? What are they looking for in a
desktop environment? Do they even know what a DE /is? /How long have
they been using Linux? Why are they using it?

A better understanding of our audience means that our definition of what
we can provide them will be more effective. A better understanding of
our users can help us do better with every step of the process, from
design to production to marketing.

On a side, free software suffers from one of the worst environments for
creating "free rider" problems. No matter how much people use the
software, a number of them will always feel as though they have no
vested interest and no responsibility for improving it. I would be
interested in seeing the overlap of donors between last time and this
time for Krita; I would reckon it's a significant portion of repeat
donors. I would be curious what impact we could have by working on
getting first-time donors for free software, now and going forward.
