Yes, this should be implemented in the KIPI batch plugin.

Since version 1.4.0, Gwenview will show the EXIF date if 
available. This is not configurable for now.

No problem, I was in fact an IrfanView user too back in my 
Windows days!

Yes, I often find myself in need of this feature. I am still
wondering how to integrate it UI wise: how should one select 
which image goes in which view...

Strange, I usually see Gwenview as a much simpler tool than 
Digikam :-) and I am in fact contemplating the possibility of
making it only a Konqueror KPart for KDE4.
