I am not sure about this, I almost never use the detail view, and neither 
Gwenview users I know. How many of you on this list do use the detail view?

Yes improving speed is always good. Note however that if you are not running 
Gwenview from within KDE4, the startup speed is quite slow because various 
KDE4 services get started as well.

That is a serious problem. It would probably be nice to only keep pixmap for 
visible thumbnails, (and maybe the previous and next two rows, to avoid too 
many empty thumbnails on scroll).

You mean scrolling the image by dragging it? I implemented this a few weeks 
ago.
