That fixed it! Thanks Aurélien! For thebenefit of others it appears that 
the Asus Eee repository has a broken version.
I removed Gwenview and reinstalled and still it didn't work. Fetching 
and replacing gwenviewui.rc from Sourceforge fixed it.
