dma bug: workarounds?

Hi all,

When burning DVDs, I seem to be afflicted by the dma disable bug,
which has been mentioned several times in this forum. That is to say,
I get excellent speeds of say 8x - 15x for a several disks, then
spontaneously write speeds drop to < 1x for subsequent burns.

I have tried manually forcing dma, but I get an error message:

$ sudo hdparm -d 1 /dev/sr1
/dev/sr1:
 setting using_dma to 1 (on)
 HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

(/dev/sr1 is indeed how K3b sees the drive).

I am running v1.0.3 under F8 (I dropped back from v1.0.4 because of
the reload media bug). Kernel is: 2.6.23.9-85.fc8

Anyone have any suggestions for a temporary workaround?

Thanks.
