Condensing several CDs onto one

Is it possible to condense tracks from several CDs onto a single one? Assume that there is sufficient space.

I have tried this, and have dragged tracks from two
different CDs into the burn window. I chose "on the fly".
When it came to burning, I was logically asked to put in the
first CD, and after I did this, was told that this failed.

If this can be done, how do I do it please?
