I've never tried that, but even so I hope this is of some help;

You don't say how whether source and destination drives are the same or
not.  If they're different, it shouldn't be a problem.  If source and
destination are the same drive, "on the fly" is going to be tricky at
best, if not impossible.  Try creating an ISO image only, and then burn
that to disk.

If that doesn't help, a more detailed sequence of events, with error
messages, etc. would help us to help you.
