How to burn a video DVD for a Sony Cassette Recorder - DVD Recorder

Am running PCLinuxOS and K3b 1.0.5 using KDE 3.5.9 and am trying to figure
out how to burn a DVD from a d/l movie in avi format that can be viewed with
a Sony RDR-VX555.  Have made several (many) attempts. Have been using DVD+RW
disks from Sony and even one Memorex DVD-R disk (now a coaster), to no
avail.

Anybody have any ideas? Have had luck with direct VCR to DVD recording
(which is one of the things this Sony is setup for) and have even recorded
from a Camcorder to this machine and then to a DVD with Avidemux, but i
forget the steps i used, duh.
