no subtitles in dvd-rip

Hi all,

When ripping a DVD, I chose a track which, according to the summary screen,
has got 2 subpictures in 2 different languages.

However, when playing the resulting movie file with mplayer or xine, I do
not see any subtitles, not even when changing the subtitle channel in e.g.
xine.

Is there something obvious I'm doing wrong? Or do the subpictures not
include the subtitles?
