Obviously, such a loop should never be intentionally - I guess the right way to move forwards would be to fix kpa to prevent this kind of loop in the UI and to break it automatically upon loading an index.xml file. I didn't think about indirect circular memberships, but I can't think of an obvious reason why they should be any different.
