Upgrading KDE

I'm currently running KDE 2.x.x and was really considering upgrading to
KDE 3.x.x for new features and mainly the use of Qt 3. Are there any
downsides to this upgrade?
And if not, how would I go about the upgrade? Currently I'm running
FreeBSD and installed KDE through the ports. Would I just use
pkg_delete / pkg_deinstall ?
