I am thinking this has nothing to do with kmail, but rather something inherent 
in kword or in the way your kde is configured to handle running programs with 
specific documents.

If you navigate to the file in konqueror and try to launch the file in kword 
from there, do you get the same blank page, or is the problem unique to kmail 
attachments?
