You only need to do that if you need to post from one address but receive replies on a different one (say you post messages from work, but want to receive the reply on your home address). If you leave the field empty it defaults to sending replies to the same address as sent the original. In mailing lists, that reply gets filled, if empty, with the list address, which helps to make sure that everyone sees and benefits from solutions.
