Finally KDE is working again. Most file in this strange directory could be 
deleted though not all. No idea why, as I changed ownership on all of them and I 
was root. Being a Linux newbie, I find that hard to understand. KDE looks fine 
again, at least so far. I was already preparing myself mentally for the pain of 
doing a complete reinstall of my OS. That saved my day!!!

BTW: when trying to send this message signed, Kmail/Kwallet tells me that the 
passphrase is wrong. As I deleted the files from /tmp, the cached passphrase 
should be gone too. How do I fix this problem? Will that be taken care of after a 
restart of my computer? Thank you for your help.
