At this point I'm not certain.  Maybe I was looking at the local mail 
directory on the laptop, where I do have quite a large number of copied 
messages.  Maybe you have to disregard my statement - sorry.

Yes, thanks to that statement I've found the mbox file.  So if the Inbox is on 
/mnt/server/anne/.kde/share/apps/kmail/imap/.1687036093.directory/ where are 
the index files?  I've got three (No Subject) Unknown Unknown 0B messages in 
the IMAP Inbox.

Right.  By examining the kmailrc both on the laptop and on the server it 
becomes clearer where these numbers come from.  The laptop calls my IMAP 
account 133252502 while the server calls it 1687036093.  Does that explain 
where I went wrong, and where I should be looking?
