Well, if a maildir-based cache is the most important requirement you 
have then KMail2 is not for you. Good luck with your new mail client! 
;-)

But if all you really need is an easy way to create a local backup of 
your remote IMAP account then maybe OfflineIMAP is what you are looking 
for. "OfflineIMAP traditionally operates by maintaining a hierarchy of 
mail folders in Maildir format locally." [1]
