   Local Folders are the mapping of your email files into folders.
It an be mapped onto e.g. a different email collection.
  For example, when trying 4.8.2, I specified (in Local Folders
account) that the emails were in the /kmail/mail directory of my KDE
4.5.2 install.

Have you tried re-creating the Local Folders account?

I imagine all your email files will still be there, waiting for
the Local Folders account to provide a mapping of them.
   (It could take some time for the email re-indexing to finish....)
