File indexing slow

I'm running kunbutu and

Qt: 4.8.2
KDE Development Platform: 4.9.4
Kontact: 4.9.4

File indexing is on, but I'm seeing maybe one file an hour getting indexed.  
Anything I can do to encourage things along?
