Is the (akonadi?) problem with korganizer in Debian 7.6.0 (Wheezy) fixed?

I'm probably going to ask quite a few questions about kmail, korganizer,
akonadi, and such, but I'll try to ask them one or a few at a time.

I have done a fair amount of googling and reading on the subject, but haven't
found answers to the questions I have (I have found answers to some
questions).

First, let me ask a very general question:

Background: I am running Debian 7.6.0, Wheezy, with kde 4.8.4, kmail 1.13.7,
and korganizer 4.4.11.

It seems that a number of people have been having problems getting korganizer
and the kaddress book working properly--it doesn't seem to work right out of
the box, and I haven't found what seems to be a clear explanation of the
problem nor of how to fix it.

Is anyone here aware of a clear explanation of the cause of the problem and a
fix?

Is upgrading to say, Debian testing the (the only) way to solve the problem?
(Is the problem fixed in Debian testing.)

More: I got hints that the problem is due to akonadi, and I did some googling,
reading, and experimenting with it. One time I got korganizer to come
referencing the standard calendar (std.ics, iirc), but it crashed seconds
later and I haven't got that far since.

BTW: I may rant more later, but I'd like to let you know how unhappy I am that
kmail, korganizer, kaddressbook, and whatever else now requires akonadi.
