I don't have a direct answer to your question because I have only
limited Unix know-how, but I can give you a link with three possible
work-arounds to make the graphical environment work under Unix. Maybe
that helps.

Easiest of the three (if you can use JDK 1.4) is the java.awt.headless
property.
