Actually Thomas, we did answer your question, although it might not have
been stated quite as clearly as you wished.

Java cannot be in a source physical file, it must be in the IFS.

David suggested Eclipse with the java extensions, that will work extremely
well and it's free
NetBeans is another option
I gave you several options.
Jack gave you a couple more

None of those require the NetServer to be up and running but do require the
SSD daemon running. 

If you do have NetServer running and shares built you can certainly use
those.

Recently there was a thread on fixing the Navigator for i problems.   I've
used several of those techniques in the past the most likely problem is if
the proper Licensed Programs are in place or not.

I do not have access to the IFS since I cannot get the older "I Navigator"
installed or seemingly cannot get the newer ways of accessing the IFS to
work. Would LOVE to talk to someone on the phone helping me walk through
that process.

But I thought at one time it was possible to put Java programs into a member
like a RPG or COBOL program and then compile.  Was I wrong on that thought?
Everyone - great comments - are saying allot but no one has answered that
question.
