As a complete newcomer, I am idly curious about a bit of history, and I
wonder if someone can enlighten me on this.

It seems clear that the focus of implementation attention today is on
the "Quick C--" implementation. I am curious if a C-- front end for GCC
was ever contemplated. If so, I would be interested to know why this
approach was not pursued.
