Preface 

 

The reason I decided to devote my time for writing this tutorial about serial communication is a question and an answer I saw in the JEDI mailing list. 

 

Q:        Please help me in communicate through RS 232 in a Delphi code.

The answer is clear, truly it’s convenient, but the question still remains as to whether this method helps the programmer of fulfilling his lack of knowledge about the API methods of serial communication, letting the vastest area alone: SERIAL COMMUNICATION. Serial communication has become very simple subject in the face of most state of art communications like USB, Fire-Wire and Wireless methods now days. So should we still postpone learning about it? 

 

To talk about the true facts, API methods of serial communication are just the surface of the subject of SERIAL COMMUNICATION when it considered from the point of view of Electronics. I don’t know whether the high level programming side of it is mere 1% of the subject when thinking about the firmware involved in actual circuits inside PCs or other equipments. 

 

So to suggest directly, you must go through even a little documentation about the concept of serial communication if you want to get most out from this tutorial. 

 

I will start the lessons from next day and since this will be published in a public mailing list, I would like to offer my welcome to any criticism about the material. The whole material is based on what I have found in the web and what I have experimented with a serial device by using Delphi. Read the following guide about communication basics before you start.
