I think using a common API in a common tool (maybe consisting of several 
components) for sockets and serial I/O is a good idea. "Async pro" (by 
Torbopower, AFAIK a free download right now) did this years ago. In many 
cases hardware "ComServers" are used to do serial communication via 
TCP/IP. In future PCs will not have serial ports any more (OK they will 
be available via USB). So making the program in a way that it can use 
TCP/IP instead of a serial port if the user wants to change is a good thing.
