Hardware configuration
The first barrier of many, usually encountered by a new comer to this particular type of programming would be setting up and establishing proper and accurate connection between devices. There are varying of various kinds of configurations and settings are existing analogous to different requirements. Fortunately we have only one standard for the RS 232 or serial communication but so unfortunately this single standard has been utilized in different ways in which a complication of factional standards are now in practice. But still it is possible to keep a hope to adapt to the whole standard by practicing different aspect of their utilization.
The first step to the Serial communication programming, after getting acknowledged of what the basic ides is, (http://www.camiresearch.com/Data_Com_Basics/data_com_tutorial.html) correctly identifying the pin configurations of both sides of the cable.
The most basic use of RS 232 interface can be accomplished by utilizing only five pins of the connector.
RX - Receive Signal
TX - Transmit Signal
DSR - DCE Ready
DTR - DTE Ready
GND - Ground
Yes, I know its really strange coding for you, but dont worry; I will discuss everything up to the last point. A serial communication can be accomplished with certain hardware devices such as PABX systems from the above wires. Discussing the hardware configuration will overwhelm the intended discussion, programming. But nothing will work with the wrong wire connections and configurations. Please refer to the reference below. Just go through it, and come to the next lesson where I will point out the important areas of that tutorial which applies to our discussion about programming. Then we can do our first practical by which we use Windows Hyper Terminal to test the hardware configuration. I am in the process of development of a Serial Port Simulator, just for the sake of this tutorial, which I will publish shortly, for the use of students who doesnt have a physical hardware device to do practical. They can do it by using two computers interconnected via serial port by using the
