Caller ID has actually become almost useless as the telemarketers have
figured out how to defeat it. While both of my phones have Caller ID
built-in, I find useless unless it's someone I already know who has not
blocked their number or made the number to show up as out of area.

I stumbled onto a neat little device called the zapper that has cut my
telemarketing calls down about 300%. The idea behind the Zapper is that
when the phone line is picked up either by the owner or the answering
machine, it send out a tone that represent the telephone companies
signal that the line is disconnected. The tone is interpreted by the
calling computer (most calls are dialed by a computer) as disconnected
and will dump the phone number from their queue.

Now, it should not be too difficult to write a small program to do the
same thing using the sound card to send the disconnect tone.
