If you are looking for a real db, you might want to consider the free and open source 
FlashFiler [ http://sourceforge.net/projects/tpflashfiler ].

We have used it for some smaller applications that still needed client / server 
capabilities.

If your need is only single-user, try TDbf [ http://tdbf.casdb.com ].
