I think (if you want to use dbf files and topaz), I would go to some kind of
middleware. Make an application for the central store and one for the shop
as an intermediate layer.

I think connecting them over the internet (without middleware) will be very
slow and because you need to share te folder where the files are also
insecure.

You could also try creating a web application, and connect the two over
internet using a webserver.
