This is the area that Alex Potanin (who worked on our prizewinning 2003 and
2005 ICFP entries) researches.

I would not have been surprised to find his work in the references, but at
least [10] and [11] include his colleagues (who I also know) at my local
university.

Hannes worked with these people when he was here for six months in 2009/10
and I'm sure knows some of them better than I do.
