I've only got the source to current CVS Gobo here, but looking at XM_FORMATTER there, it chains in an XM_XMLNS_GENERATOR. If it does the same in 3.3, then you might try eliminating that (I'm assuming your application is not namespace aware) in your own custom version of XM_FORMATTER.
