I was asking myself the same questions some time ago. I read
somewhere that linking statically some LGPL library with some
proprietary application was considered acceptable as long as a
version of the application linking the library dynamically was
simultaneously available. In some sense, this says that you
did not have to modify the library to make your application work.

Besides that, I totally agree with Vesa that libgmp should be optional
in mlton. It takes hours to compile it on mingw, for instance.
I'm not in favor of totally dropping IntInf however, but rather of
providing by default a basic implementation of IntInf, together
with an optional libgmp-based library.
