.NET CLR?

given Nice's claim that it is not here to replace
Java..

all these talk of the wretched JVM is giving me a
headache. I don't see myself getting involved in Nice
anyway, but still, why not .NET CLR?

they are going to support generics, I mean, their VM
is going to support generics. they are not that much
class centric... functions are not necessarily
methods, I guess. I am not very keen on the fine
difference between Java generics, ML sub-typing, and
CLR generics, so forgive me if I am dreaming.

and forgive me if this thing has been on for long in
this mailing list.. I am a recent subscriber.

no type erasure, no nothing. I think Microsoft took
the problem of static typing more seriously than Sun. 

but these developments... they are so.. SLOW! 1982 -
2005... the PC revolution is old enough. 

another thing... which is almost outrageous. I was
thinking about it... and I guess everyone here will
see the point of it...

the VMs are just great. write once, run anywhere is a
tremendous slogan. but what kind of VM are these... I
think a lot can be done. the functional languages need
a functional VM. with ML style static typing. 

functional programming languages tend to be pure.
monads, existential types, and too much work around
when it comes to GUI... I am extremely slow keeping
up,... following the rationals. I guess it's not just
me, many will face the difficulties here. can you guys
suggest me any other language with sophisticated
typing AND good GUI techniques? I am an amateur, as
should be evident by now, so I am not really trying to
do anything... just trying to learn new things.
