Gradients in PDF::API2 [Re-posted]

Sorry to re-ask this, but I didn't get any responses last time ...

Is there any way to create a gradient other than:
1) hundreds of small rects
2) importing an image that has the gradient and scaling it

Both are non-optimal solutions, so I'd love to find something that was
PDF-native.
