You could try one of the versions of XML::LibXML::Common from Backpan:

  http://backpan.perl.org/authors/id/P/PH/PHISH/

But it really does sound like you're making things hard for yourself.
For example if you really must stick with the old unsupported version of
Perl, why not install a newer one *as well* ?
