Actually Tim's answer was fine.  It wasn't a simple "that's not how we do 
things here".  The concerns he is raising are not new, and were largely (not 
all) brought on by not understand why Smalltalk doesn't work like the less 
functional systems he is used to.

If someone came up to you with a lawnmower and asked how can they make the 
blade stop turning so that they can cut the grass how they used to with a 
Scythe, what would you do?  Help them stabilize the blade, or point out that 
we have progressed and they don't need to work so hard anymore?
