I believe that's why nature is taking us to the model of open source,
with pay for support.

If you aren't able to support the code you downloaded for free, and
need support right now, you'll pay for the help.  Nothing to stop you
from using the code in the first place, but you can bet that for new
software, there won't be too many "experts" available to help you get
a project started.

After a while, knowledge of any new software ceases to be the "secret
sauce" by which one can make money.  Closed source just makes that
time window larger.  People are smart enough nowadays to make open
source with paid support a reality.
