I've been doing it for 12 years myself, but I would much rather being researching the future then fighting with a complicated stack of software to make some "could be so much simpler and more powerful" piece of software work.  There has been rewarding times, but nothing compared to what there could be. :)

I don't care so much to be rich.  Just independent.  The world is a big beautiful place and I would love to see more of it and share it with my family.  Take a 3 month vacation if I want to.  But if you follow the cubicle path you wont be even thinking about this until you retire.

This point of view I can't fathom.  Is everyone who makes something and then gets paid for it evil, or only software developers?

Then we can only agree to disagree.  At this point in time I sell no software and have released various packages libre-free open source, happily.  But I also have no problem if people can write something proprietary and get financially independent from it.  They don't owe us *anything*.  If they choose to release it, then thank you very very much, but it is not our right by any stretch of imagination.
