I've been doing bespoke software for my whole working life
(in 30+ years, I've never worked for a "software company").
I haven't, for the most part, found it boring at all, and in many
cases extremely rewarding.

Can't say it ever interested me.  I just wanted to do good, interesting
work and get paid enough to live on and feed a number of modest
habits.

Note that Google isn't a software company either; it's a high-technology media
company.
