For the other, I can do something like eval `cat $SMLNJ_HOME/$SMLNJ_VERSION/bin/.arch-n-opsys` and now it's the value of $HEAP_SUFFIX. The natural place for this information would be the CM structure, but I don't find it there. -- Nothing can be explained to a stone.
