Wow! I remembered that I had originally set SMLNJ_HOME=C:\smlnj when I had a non-Cygwin install, and then when I switched to a Cygwin install, I forgot to unset that environment variable. So on a whim, I tried unsetting SMLNJ_HOME, and it worked! You may want to put a warning in the install information that Cygwin installations should *not* set their SMLNJ_HOME variable.
