UTF-8 Demo in testsite is broken

Hi

I did some research on why the UTF-8 template demo is broken in 
testsite. The template works fine when used with a minimal smarty setup 
so I guess it is Node or Template breaking it.

Could somebody please have a look. I have no idea what could be causing 
this.
