Not bad ;)

I like cheetah and cherrypy was quite nice. Nevow has some excellent, 
elegant tools - and TwistedMatrix is insane and amazing - but a lot of 
it is unmaintained.

Even on pretty restricted webhosts, it's fairly easy to install fastcgi 
and ruby...

Well, time to help your clients understand, I think. Tell them that you 
can use PHP but the budget will increase by 40% because of the inferior 
tools. If you put it nicely, and give them a clear path to see what you 
want and why you want it, every one of them will be happy to see you 
doing more in less time.

In any case, subway looks good, but it's a copy, and copies usually 
aren't as good as the original :)
