George,

I do not see z/VM is listed as one of the ICU supported platforms.
Is z/VM supported? How is a "reference" platform different from a
"Regularly tested" platform?

Also, z/OS has a "Support for Unicode Using Conversion Services" product.
DB2 and most IBM languages use it.
Under what situations, should programmers use ICU instead of z/OS "Support
for Unicode Using Conversion Services"
On the mainframe platform?

Thanks in advance

Suelee

In this case, ICU means ICU4C (no space in the name).

The ICU project has three subprojects: ICU4C, ICU4J and ICU4JNI. ICU4C is
written in C and C++. ICU4J is written in Java. ICU4JNI is a Java
wrapper around some of the C and C++ code using the Java JNI interface.
All three subprojects use the same versioning scheme (as of 2.0 and
onwards).

To clarify Markus' comments... z/OS is not a reference platform, but
ICU4C builds on z/OS. We try our best to make ICU4C build and test on
z/OS, but we depend on other contributors to do this for us.

Folks,

I am new to ICU. I am confused with the naming of ICU 4C and ICU 2.6.1.

What are ICU 4C and ICU 2.6.1. Is 2.6.1 is a minor release in ICU 4C or both
are different release cycles?

Thanks in advance
Srini

Yes. Please see the Platform Installation Notes on the download page for the
latest ICU release: http://oss.software.ibm.com/icu/download/2.6.1/

Note that we are planning to release ICU 2.8 in December.

For support questions please use the icu4c-support mailing list as noted on
http://oss.software.ibm.com/icu/archives/

Best regards,
markus
