I think this is related to the sample. I used a TreeCtrl in Absinthe,
and it doesn't crash on the same actions. (I'll try to take a look at
the sample to narrow down the bug.)

I'm not sure where the flickering is you saw, so I can't say for sure.
For some controls there are methods to turn of repainting during
operations that would cause flicker.

I'm still pretty new to wx.net myself, but overall I'd recommend
avoiding anything that can be done with the CLR
(xml/streams/threads/IO)

Try creating a small app using XRC and a small app with straight code
and see what feels more comfortable. Other than that, just email here
as you run into problems.
