Does your institution provide a VPN?    I have used ARD via a VPN with and
an ssh
tunnel for remote access to macs, mostly administration and batch
processing.
IT only provided VPN on Windows, so it took some experimenting to find a
client that
worked with ARD, and often broke with new Apple OS versions.
