Hello Gunter, That's very strange. I have no idea what CHRPS is or where that error message might be coming from. Please repeat the plot2d command but ending with ; instead of $, to see if a file is created. If it is created, can you please send me a copy of that file and the complete error message you got? If you just type xmaxima in a terminal, does it open the Xmaxima console? What operating system are you using?
