Yeah -- I went digging into the implementation some years ago and if I
recall correctly, it was actually just executing gzip.

Yeah, I think if it's not too big and the license is suitable, we
could just copy it verbatim. I was going to add, and the code is not
getting too many updates, but I think it's likely that any
implementation is unchanging at this point.

Well, if we end up with such a library as an external dependency, that
it would be pulled into the build and baked into the binary image. So
actually obtaining the library would only be an issue for developers.
